TEMPLE (November 2, 2012)—Jorge Benitz, 30, of Temple, was in the Bell County Jail Friday, charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession, fleeing from a police officer and taking a weapon for a police officer.
The charges stem from an incident on Thursday that started when a Temple police officer attempted to pull a driver over for an equipment violation.
The driver didn’t stop and attempted to escape, but turned down a dead end road near the 500 block of South 27th Street, where he abandoned his car and ran.
The officer caught up with him, but as he attempted to take the man into custody, a struggle ensued, police said.
The officer and the man rolled down a small embankment and the man ended up on top of the officer, police said.
The man stood up, but instead of running, grabbed the officer’s leg and then when the officer tried to kick free, the man grabbed the Taser, police said.
The officer put his hands over the stun gun as the man tried to pull it from his holster and the two wrestled for the Taser until backup units arrived.
The man continued to try to take the Taser until officers subdued him and took him into custody, police said.
Both he and the officer were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
