Temple: Many Local Children May Be Going To Bed Hungry

TEMPLE (February 14, 2013) ---Many of the growing number of children eligible for free or reduced lunches in Temple schools may not be getting enough to eat before and after the school day, the non-profit Communities in Schools says.

In Temple schools, 73 percent of the students are eligible for the lunch program, which means almost three out of four children may be in that group.

CIS gets food from the Capital Area Food bank to supply its food pantry and then gets it to children who may not be getting enough to eat at home.

In many cases Mary Erwin Barr said the organization has to send enough food home with a child for the whole family or that student may still not get enough to eat because of smaller portions.

"We need to get food in their tummies across the board and no child should go to bed hungry or cold or scared, so we need to get the food there but then we need to look at why there's not food there," Barr said.
