TEMPLE (January 29, 2013)—Temple School Board members Tuesday put a discussion about whether to move forward with a policy regarding teachers and classrooms on hold pending action by the Texas Legislature on the issue.
School officials say they want to see what comes out of the current legislative session regarding teachers and firearms and whether lawmakers offer guidance or funding.
School resource officers on Temple campuses do carry guns and Temple police are able to respond quickly to incidents, officials say, pointing out that the handful of Texas districts that have adopted policies allowing teachers to carry guns are largely rural.
School officials in Gatesville and Little-River Academy are also considering such policies.
