TEMPLE (November 5, 2012) - Temple Independent School District staff and parents met for their first of four meetings on attendance boundaries for elementary school level children.

Temple ISD looked at the recent census and changes in the district that have happened over the last ten years.

They discovered a large growth of English Language Learner students, growth in the southeast quadrant of Temple and growth in pre-kindergarten enrollment.

They also decided it was time to draw attendance boundaries for the school district because of increased rigor in states standards.

"We want to make sure all schools have a chance to meet the accountability standards that's required," said Dr. Robin Battershell, Temple ISD superintendent.

A series of four meetings will provide information about what the capacity of the campus enrollments are and what impact the bond has made that was passed in May 2011.

"Tonight's group will be assigned homework after the meeting," said Battershell. "We will meet again in two weeks to provide feedback on what non-negotiables are when we draw attendance zones, what are their concerns, and what do we need to consider whenever we draw zones."

The meetings are a chance to reinvent Temple ISD at the elementary school level by redrawing elementary rezoning lines.

Software called Transfinder was introduced at the meeting, held at the Temple Library.

Those who attended asked questions and began thinking up scenarios to plug into the Transfinder program.

Battershell said that she wanted those at the meeting to bring back questions to the meeting on November 15, that will help begin the working of configurations in the software program.

By the beginning of January, Battershell told the group that she wants to have different scenarios that can be taken to different forums and community groups to get input before final decisions are reached.
