TEMPLE (October 17, 2012)--- Just more than a year ago the City of Temple kicked off a recycling program in certain neighborhoods.

The program expanded to all four parts of the city recently and more than 4,000 customers with the City of Temple have taken advantage of the once-weekly curbside recycling program that sorts the items for the residents.

Temple Director of Public Works Nicole Torralva said about 20% of the residents using the garbage pick-up services are also recycling.

Torralva said the pilot recycling program recently started in the north and west neighborhoods of the city and they are set to have neighborhood meetings on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 to get feedback from residents.

Torralva said they wanted to begin a recycling program after concerns about the landfill filling up came to light.

Temple shares a landfill with seven other counties.

Torralva said the landfill will likely fill up in about 15 years.

Currently the recycling program is free to customers because the recycling pick-up day once a week took the place of a second garbage pick-up day.

City of Belton officials say they are currently working on a similar recycling program for the city and established pilot programs in four neighborhoods already.

They expect the program to kick off in early 2013.

The City of Waco started to encourage residents to trade their 35-gallon recycling bins for 90-gallon bins.

Residents can also request two 35-gallon bins.
