ELM MOTT ( March 22, 2013)-Katherine Mercer, a 6th grader at Connally Jr. High School has been selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C.

The national conference focuses on hands-on experiences and workshops to teach youth leadership concepts.

"I got a letter in the mail and had never heard of it, so I called the school and found her science teacher had nominated her," Katherine's mother, Christine Mercer said.

"Her teacher said she nominated her because she thought she would be outstanding for it, because of her good grades and volunteer work," Mercer added.

Katherine has done many events to benefit the community including her most recent, the Waco VA Living Center Benefit at Skate World on Veteran's Day.

"She loves to help others, she cannot stand to see people in need," Mercer said.

Collecting canned food for local food banks along with jackets and blanket to donate to the Meyer Center are other activities Katherine has initiated.

"Helping others makes her feel good, it seems like every time I turn around there is another cause she wants to help," Mercer said.

The conference will be held this summer and will cost $2,000 to attend, not including travel expenses.

Currently, the family is trying to figure out how to pay for the trip.

A loud auction with items donated may be a possible option for the family, Mercer said.

The family is also debating of trying to find sponsors or possibly both.

"It really makes me feel good that she was honored for this," Mercer said.

While the family tries to figure out ways to pay for the conference by May 1, Katherine and her family will also be getting ready for a bake sale to benefit the American Cancer Society on March 30th.

Katherine will be selling hot dog plates all day at the Hot Rod Shop to raise money for eye research at this event.

"We already had this set up and then I get this letter and I'm like, Oh, I need money for that too," Mercer said.

Youth from all over the states will attend the six day conference this summer.

"As long as Katie is helping others, she doesn't care if things happen for her which is why I really want this for her," Mercer said.
