WACO (August 6, 2013)—Lake Air Drive between West Waco Drive and Franklin Avenue was closed Tuesday morning after a backhoe cut into a gas line.

Firefighters were sent to the scene behind the Burlington Coat Factory store at about 8:45 a.m. after a City of Waco crew reported cutting the line.

Firefighters evacuated employees from the Burlington store as a precaution.

A spokesman for the city at the scene said a crew was digging to replace a fire hydrant when the line was cut.

The foreman said the 2-inch line was mis-marked by about four feet so the digging crew was not aware it was so close to the line.

An assistant fire chief at the scene said a wind blowing out of the south was dissipating the gas and the hazard level was low but a HazMat team was at the scene to monitor air quality.

It took several hours to fix the break, but the road was later reopened.
