HEWITT (December 6, 2012) - A Midway ISD elementary school teacher was arrested Thursday morning on warrants charging two counts of indecency with a child.
John Gates, 60, is listed as a fourth grade teacher at Hewitt Elementary School.
Hewitt police say the alleged incidents occurred on Dendron Drive in Hewitt between June 2003 and June 2009, and were not school related and did not involve any of his students.
He was in the McLennan County Jail Thursday morning awaiting arraignment.
In an arrest affidavit signed by McLennan County Justice of the Peace Pat Richardson a Hewitt police detective says he was made aware of the allegations against Gates when a female victim came forward and reported that a man had been inappropriately touching her since she was about 5 or 6 years old.
The affidavit says the man touched her inside her clothing while he read her bedtime stories.
The affidavit says the victim reported the events happened several times until she was 10 or 11.
The district prepared a letter to be sent home to parents making it clear that the alleged incidents from which the charges stem “occurred outside the scope of John Gates employment with the district and did not involve any students under his supervision.”
In that letter, it states, "Due to the nature of the allegations, Mr. Gates has not been in the classroom since October 9."
A district spokeswoman also told News 10 the district is working with authorities in any way they can in the investigation.
