WACO (January 17, 2013) -- Waco police took a man in custody after he barricaded himself inside a home and held officers at bay for almost five hours.

A standoff between the man and police started just after 11:00 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 Block of Howard St. in Waco.

Waco police said the incident started after Woodway police chased a man in a stolen car into Waco.

Woodway Public Safety Director Yost Zakhary said Woodway patrol officers had been looking for Chris Carlos DeLeon for several days.

Zakhary said officers spotted DeLeon driving on State Highway 6 at about 11 p.m. and tried to stop him but he fled.

During the chase DeLeon wrecked the car he was driving and began running on foot.

DeLeon ran to his residence on Howard Street and barricaded himself inside with several other people.

The other people inside the home were brought out safely but DeLeon refused to leave.

At around 3:30 a.m., Waco police used tear gas to get DeLeon out of the home.

DeLeon was charged Thursday with evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, evading arrest, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and driving with an invalid license.

He was also charged with aggravated assault in an incident on December 24 in which a 34-year-old man was struck with a tire jack handle and a metal pipe during after confronting a man and ordering him to leave the property.

The victim suffered a facial fracture, a broken arm and a serious head laceration and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, police said.
