WACO (March 6, 2014) A retired sheriff's deputy's handgun that was reported stolen last week from a locker at a Waco gym has been recovered after a search of other lockers, police said.
Employees of Gold's Gym, on West Waco Drive, searched several lockers in the locker room after the gym closed and found the deputy's gym bag, which contained the .45-caliber handgun.\
They reported the discovery to police, Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.
The handgun is a Taurus Judge, which can fire either .45-caliber rounds or .410 shotgun shells.
Swanton said Waco police detectives are continuing to investigate the theft, as well as several others that have happened at the same place.
The deputy told officers he left the weapon along with his street clothes inside the locker, which he secured with a padlock before working out, Swanton said.
When he returned to dress, he discovered that the padlock and the gun were gone.
The incident wasn't isolated, Swanton said.
"There have been several thefts and burglaries in the Gold's Gym and also the parking lot area," he said.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have observed suspicious behavior in the gym or in the parking lot to call Detective Head at (254) 750-3656 or Waco Crime Stoppers at (254) 753-HELP.
