WACO (March 26, 2014) A Midway Middle School student defeated her twin brother to win first place at the Central Texas Regional Spelling Bee.

Anna Turner will go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May in Washington, D.C.

After battling for nearly thirty rounds during the spelling bee, Jacob Turner misspelled a word.

Anna then spelled her word, "ergonomic" correctly and won.

"You have to have courage just to stand on stage," Anna said.

"There is some pressure because if you miss one word you are out. You have to study to make sure you know all of them."

Jacob said he is happy for his sister, but hopes next year it is his turn to take home first place.

"I only have one more year to compete before I can no longer compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee so I want to take advantage of my last opportunity," Jacob said.

The twins have been competing in spelling bees since fifth grade.

Their mother, Jo Ann Turner, helps them practice.

"It was hard that they both couldn't win," Jo Ann said.

"But in the end only one can win. I am proud of both of them and the time they put into this. It showed."

Jo Ann said this experience is about more than just spelling.

She said her children also learn how to stand in front of a crowd, keep composure and learn how to handle a loss.
