WACO (February 21, 2013)--The City of Waco and Waco ISD have agreed to start the process of a swap that would give the district ownership of athletic fields and the city an additional parking area downtown.

For several months the city has had its eye on a piece of property owned by Waco ISD along University Parks Drive downtown, a part of the Indian Spring Middle School property that is not currently in use.

The city hopes to use the area for additional parking.

Meanwhile, the school district has had its eye on land off Dutton Avenue next to Cesar Chavez Middle School.

Workers have been busy getting Cesar Chavez Middle School ready for students who will return this fall after the school's temporary closure for renovations, which included an additional classroom wing.

The just more than three-acre tract owned by WISD was appraised at around $336,000 while the land owned by the city, appraised at around $185,000, consists of just more than seven acres.

While both parties agreed Wednesday that the swap would be beneficial, details remain to be worked out.

The Waco School Board could discuss the swap Thursday night.

"If action is not taken at Thursday's workshop, action will be taken at the next regular meeting," WISD spokesman Dale Caffey said.
