Waco Hotel’s Closing Leaves Those With Reservations Hanging

WACO (July 28, 2014) The looming closure of Waco’s Clarion Hotel at 801 South 4th St. in Waco left those with reservations including the parents of incoming Baylor University students and former students who plan to attend Baylor’s Homecoming celebration in October.

Calls to the 148-room hotel Monday confirmed the Clarion is closing in late August.

It comes after the sale of the property to DW Limited Partners, according to deed records that News Ten obtained Monday.

Baylor learned about the closing last week after the hotel called the school’s Campus and Learning Offices to cancel reservations the university made for students and families coming to town for orientation and campus move-in before the start of the fall semester, Baylor spokeswoman Lori Fogelman said Monday.

The university was scrambling Monday to find accommodations for the students and their families, she said.

Baylor graduate Victoria Rex, who lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, made a reservation for Homecoming weekend.

A Clarion representative called her last week and told her the hotel had been sold and “was being turned into a parking lot,” she said in an email Monday.

“They offered no assistance on finding a new place to stay,” she said.

“Almost every hotel was completely sold out when I started calling around,” she said.

The woman who called told her that employees had known about the closing for two months, Rex said.

News 10 was unable to reach the new owners of the property Monday and could not confirm what’s planned for the site, which is directly across Interstate 35 from the Baylor campus.

Waco Convention & Visitor Services provides help in locating rooms during peak periods, said Susan Morton, sales & Service manager-tourism, Waco & the Heart of Texas.
