WACO (January 4, 2013)--23-year-old Travis Bigham is continuing to recover two-and-a-half years after being seriously injured in a drunken driving accident in which he was the passenger.
Bigham will turn 24 years old this weekend.
After being in a coma, suffering severe brain injuries and a fractured hip, “Superman” (as his loved ones call him) will be leaving next week for Galveston where he will be spending the next six months at the Transitional Learning Center to receive intensive rehab for brain injury patients.
After a recent swallow study last month, Bigham is finally able to eat very small amounts of mashed potatoes and a few other puréed foods.
Despite his inability to talk, Bigham has been using a blog to share his story and wrote this message in a previous post: “I can do this!!! With the help of my family, the power of God, and my very own determination, will-power, and strength, I WILL do this!!! There is just no other way. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I have always loved Superman. My family tells me I am their Superman. I intend to live up to the title."
"The greatest blessing is the fact that he is so deliberate in wanting to make me smile and laugh with him. I've never in my entire life met someone that defines perseverance and determination like Travis," one family friend said.
A "Benefit Fund for Travis Bigham" has been set up at Extraco Banks on Hewitt Dr. to help with medical expenses.
A birthday celebration and good luck party will be held Sunday at the home of his aunt and uncle, Mindy and Troy, on Wentwood Circle in Hewitt.
The party is come and go from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and Superman is the theme.
For more information or directions, call Mindy at (254) 644-3797.
