WACO (February 28, 2013)--The Baylor School of Music percussion team is drumming up support for musical instruments in a two-day symposium.

A variety of events have kicked off the event including several visits to local schools to provide entertainment and teach children about the instruments.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m. the group “So Percussion” and the "Meehan/Perkins Duo" will join forces to beat on flower pots, steel pipes and other objects to create music.

The symposium continues Saturday in the afternoon when Baylor music students will learn from the pros that have been recognized by publishers New York Times and The Financial Times.

A closing concert will get underway at 5 p.m. featuring works by Princeton faculty composer Paul Lansky.

“On a personal note, this year is extra exciting for me as I served as a co-founding member of our guest group, So Percussion, from 1999-03. My duo partner Doug Perkins and I helped form the group at Yale…and So Percussion is still trucking along at full steam. This year’s symposium will be a reunion of sorts for past and present members of the ensemble,” Assistant Professor of Percussion Todd Meehan said.

All events are free and open to the public.

They will be held in Jones Concert Hall on campus.
