Area Homeless Housing Programs Receive Nearly $750,000 From HUD

WACO (March 14, 2013)- Four different Waco homeless housing programs were awarded crucial grant renewals from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday.
Below are the Waco/McLennan County homeless housing programs who received grant renewals:

-Heart of Texas MHMR Center $120,683

-Compassion Ministries $158,594

-Mission Waco $178,971

-Family Abuse Center $212,589

-City of Waco (the City of Waco received funding for data Collection purposes) $62,653

TOTAL: $733,490

All grant renewals in McLennan County were handled by the Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition.

According to their President, Kathy Reid, the McLennan County area received 3.5% less in federal funding this year. Reid says the loss was an estimated $23,000.

Applying for federal grants can be a rigorous process. Reid says many grants the Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition applies for are never guaranteed.

Reid believes that recent budget cuts have brought that realization to life more than ever.

"The hard part comes not knowing what to expect," Reid says.

"Do these sequester cuts mean that I'm going to get a letter that undoes a contract or a grant that I got 6 months ago? Or will grants just be less next year when I apply? The whole process is all very nerve racking."

Reid says homeless housing programs were told by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to expect a 5% decrease in federal funding for the year 2014.
