Checks Of Local Jail Visitors Lead To Surge In Arrests

MCLENNAN COUNTY (March 17, 2013)--Arrest totals from the first three months of the year are in for the McLennan County Sheriff's office and so far 2013 is proving to be a rough year for criminals inside in the county.

Sheriff Parnell McNamara released arrest totals to News 10 that have been tallied since his administration took office in January 2013.

McNamara says arrests are approximately up 40% as compared to this time last year and one reason is that deputies are screening people who arrive to visit inmates in the county jail.

They've arrested 51 people so far and have cleared 195 warrants.

"They kind of just walk back into a trap," McNamara said.

"They're wanted, they want to talk to someone in jail, and then they're caught. They then get an opportunity to talk to them face to face inside the county jail,” he said.

McNamara credits his deputies for the sheriff's office recent dent on crime.

"This administration is very enforcement oriented, and we are very tuned in to the safety of the public," McNamara said. "All of our deputies are really working hard to make sure we accomplish that goal."
