WACO (November 1, 2012)--The Union Pacific 844 steam train passed through Waco on its way to Pueblo, Colorado Thursday.
Spectators gathered at Katy Lane Crossing just before 11 a.m. to see the rare engine passing through.
The “Living Legend” left October 11 from Nebraska and headed south as part of the Union Pacific 150th anniversary celebration.
Steam locomotives are fueled by burning combustible material, usually coal, wood or oil, to produce steam in a boiler.
The steam drives the engine.
Diesel locomotives began to take over in popularity in the 1930s and steam engines were almost completely nonexistent by the late 1960s.
