BELTON (October 11, 2013)--Nineteen of the 22 property owners on 9th Avenue from Main Street to Loop 321 who signed a petition asking the Belton City Council to rename the street in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. favored the proposal, the city said Friday.
Three were opposed to the proposed change.
The deadline for signatures was 5 p.m. Friday.
“With 86% of respondents voting in favor of the proposal, the petition has met the 70% affirmative property-owner response threshold required before a request may be considered by the Belton City Council,” the city said in a press release.
The council will consider the proposal on Oct. 22, the city said.
The request to rename the street was filed with the City of Belton by Belton African-American Churches United.
