TEMPLE (March 21, 2013)--The Temple Police Department announced an increase in traffic enforcement Thursday on 31st Street from Avenue R south to FM 93 in an effort to curb the number of accidents.
A third of the city's 15 fatal traffic accidents over the last 14 months have occurred on 31st street, police said, and three of them involved pedestrians.
The most recent occurred on March 8 at South 31st and Sleepy Hollow Road where a driver turned into the path of an oncoming truck.
"The goal of the initiative is to curb this unfortunate trend," Temple police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox said Thursday.
"The Temple Police Department has historically seen a direct relationship between highly visible, consistent traffic law enforcement in a focused area and a reduction in the rate of crashes in that area, including fatal crashes," he said.
Officers will crack down on aggressive driving, failures to yield, and other moving violations.
