ABBOTT (September 27, 2013)--Department of Public Safety troopers, firefighters and EMS personnel responded Friday afternoon to accidents on Interstate 35 in which at least one person was reported to be trapped in the wreckage.

A DPS trooper at the scene said traffic was moving extremely slowly between mile markers 357 and 356 southbound, just about a mile south of Abbott on Interstate 35.

Details of the accident were not immediately available but it was known that firefighters were using the Jaws of Life to help free one of the victims from a wrecked vehicle.

The accident involved a car and an 18-wheeler.

The victim's condition and information about other injured people was not known.

The accident was one of two multi-vehicle crashes reported in the area.

The crash in the northbound lanes involved as many as 17 vehicles according to some reports.

Southbound traffic was backed up for about 2 ½ miles and northbound traffic for about 4 miles, the Texas Department of Transportation said at around 3:15 p.m.
