(December 20, 2012)--The Better Business Bureau is warning people to use their head more than their heart when purchasing a dog over the holidays.

The organization says they have received hundreds of complaints against dog breeders alleging that the puppies developed severe illnesses shortly after the puppy was purchased.

Since pets are a popular gift idea around the holidays, the BBB says research is a necessity.

Other tips the BBB provides to ensure a worthwhile purchase if purchasing from a breeder are to ask for referrals, visit the premises and ask to see the canine parents, ask for references from people who have purchased from them in the past and avoid buying a puppy online.

The BBB says anyone considering buying a four-legged friend should always read contracts thoroughly, ask for medical records and keep the puppy quarantined until they are given a clean bill of health, especially if you own other pets.
