(April 22, 2013)--The Better Business Bureau is warning residents of malicious web links in the wake of the recent West explosion and Boston Marathon bombings.

Shortly after the West fertilizer plant explosion, a link indicating “CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Fertilizer Plant Explosion Near Waco, Texas” began circulating the web. Clicking on the link would take you to a video, however, another malicious video link would pop up that, if clicked on, would download malicious malware onto the computer.

As news of the Boston Marathon bombings spread, a charity scam popped up under a fake Twitter account asking account users to retweet information in exchange for a donation.

That page was shut down.

The BBB recommends doing your research before donating money, confirm text code numbers if donating by text message, and never click on anything unfamiliar.

To report a scam or for more information, call the BBB’s Central Texas office at (512) 445-4748.
