(January 29, 2013)--The Better Business Bureau is warning residents to beware of tax preparer fraud ahead of tax season.

The tax filing season opens Wednesday.

The IRS says there are several tax-related schemes including internet solicitations that direct taxpayers to toll-free numbers and then ask for their social security number as well as the promise of refunds or “Low Income-No Documents Tax Returns.”

Other forms of fraud can begin with homemade flyers implying credits and refunds without proof of eligibility and the offering of free money with no documentation required.

The BBB says steps can be taken to reduce your chance of becoming a victim of income tax fraud.

First, get references and research the company, look for credentials, get a firm estimate in writing, don’t believe a promise of big refunds and protect your identity.

Also, the IRS never initiates taxpayer communications through e-mail.
