BELL COUNTY (July 30, 2014) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is proposing to close some parks at both Lake Belton and Lake Stillhouse during the winter months and hosted a meeting Wednesday in Belton to discuss the plan, which is intended to save money.
"We looked at some of the camping utilization records that we have, visitation records that we have for the winter and we are trying to see where the most use is" said Ronnie Bruggman, Corps of Engineer lakes manager.
"We found out that some of these parks are not used very much. 80 percent of visitors come in the summer,” he said.
More than 2 million people visit the area lakes every year, he said.
If the proposal is approved then certain parks will be closed for five months from October through February.
"We are closing a few of our camping parks," he said.
"We are closing some of our day use areas and we are closing some of our boat ramps."
Bruggman said the closures would help the Corps of Engineers save the cost of hiring contractors to clean up the parks or work at the gates during the winter months.
The public has until Aug. 30 to comment.
