BELL COUNTY (March 18, 2013) --- A donation from the Belton Rotary Club to the Bell County Sheriff's Office will provide funds to purchase one Taser for a guard at the Bell County Jail.
On Monday morning the Bell County Commissioners moved to accept a donation from the club of just less than $1,000.
Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange said that’s just enough to provide the Taser to one of the supervisors at the Bell County Jail in Belton.
The plan is eventually to provide four Tasers, three of which would be assigned to supervisors and one to the booking department.
Lange said members of the Rotary Club saw the need after several of them were invited to tour of the jail, and learned about jail guards who were filing worker's compensation claims for injuries suffered in physical altercations with inmates.
"We don't want any altercation to happen that could lead to harm of the employees or inmates, and this could cut down on that problem," Lange said.
Lange said the selected jail supervisors will be trained on how to use the device and hopes to have the Taser on site within the next six months.
