BELL COUNTY (November 7, 2013) An effort is underway to turn U.S. 190 in Bell County into a dual-designation highway that retains its current status as well as that of an interstate.

What supporters hope would become U.S. 190/Interstate 14 links Interstate 35 to Copperas Cove and is a heavily-traveled route to the Fort Hood area.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Ken Roberts called the push a "grass-routes operation” that involves the communities along the highway.

TxDOT would not become involved unless legislation authorizing the change passes.

A letter from Copperas Cove Mayor John Hull says Cove fully supports the status change of the highway and says an interstate would expedite traffic flow in and out of Fort Hood.

Killeen mayor Dan Corbin said he hopes the change will bring about "at least 2900 new jobs," adding that there is a "need to diversify our economy."
