(December 17, 2012)--Another scam has hit Central Texas, this time the scammer claims to represent a federal agency.

According to a Bell County resident, a man called her number and claimed that the agency had been monitoring her internet activity because of illegal activity.

She was told that federal authorities were going to confiscate her computer and she was advised to cooperate.

The resident says she was never allowed to say anything other than “yes” and “no” and that the caller never identified himself. She hung up.

Upon calling the number back, a recording claiming to be the “national justice center” told the caller that a $500 fine was owed for not showing up to jury duty.

Fortunately, the resident realized it was a scam.

“The man had a firm, calm voice… I realized the first call was to get me upset and to lure me into calling them back only to be more intimidated into sending $500 for a bogus fine,” she said.

The Better Business Bureau says pressure and urgency are often warning signs of a scam.
