BELLMEAD (May 15, 2013)--A Bellmead man was held Wednesday in the McLennan County Jail, charged in connection with what police are calling a hate crime.

Juan Antonio Deluna, 29, was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bond, charged with aggravated assault hate crime, jail records showed.

Bellmead police Detective Michael Miller said officers arrested Deluna just after 11 p.m. Tuesday at a service station at 3612 Bellmead Dr. after a man reported he was attacked and injured by another man who was using racial slurs.

The victim had come to the aid of his nephew who was being threatened by a man who claimed to be a member of Taco Blast, a local gang, Miller said.

The suspect tried to get the victim to fight him, but the victim refused and tried to walk away.

As the victim got to his car, the suspect kicked the car door, which struck and cut the victim's head.

Miller said the victim did not require medical attention.

Police arrested a suspect outside the gas station.
