BELTON (March 14, 2014) UMHB’s Concert Choir will perform for the first time next Wednesday at the American Choral Directors Association biennial divisional conference in Little Rock, Ark., after being selected from among 35 schools that sought the invitation.
The association invited five of the 35 choirs to perform.
"We beat out universities ten times our size that have graduate vocal programs to get this recognition," said Choir Director Dr. Michelle Roueche.
Roueche submitted recordings of three years of performances by the choir that a panel judged without knowing the source.
"I think it's very rare," Roueche said.
"Our kids just really bought into the dream and worked really hard for it."
"Getting invited at this level is comparable to making it into the NCAA Sweet 16," she said.
"This selection means that they are ranking us among the top five groups in the seven state region."
The region includes Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
The nonprofit music-education organization is dedicated to promoting excellence in choral music through performance, composition, publication, research, and teaching.
