CHILTON (May 7, 2014) Chilton Elementary School Principal Gladys Graves has won the H-E-B Educators Excellence Award in the elementary principal category.
More than 900 educators competed for the award.
Graves was among 24 semifinalists and five finalists.
Graves won $10,000 for herself, and $25,000 for her school.
She plans to use this money to fund a 4th and 5th grade trip to Washington D.C. which the school takes once every two years.
This year, 38 students and supervisors were able to make the trip.
Graves has been in education for 16 years, 13 of which were spent as principal at Chilton Elementary.
She credits her husband, Vietnam Veteran Robert Graves, who supported her as she returned to school when she was in her 30s to get her degree, allowing her to begin her career in education.
All of six of the Graves’ children attended Chilton Elementary, which plans to have a celebration in her honor.
