COPPERAS COVE (November 11, 2013) A businessman and a local restaurant paid it forward to honor those who served their country Monday.

After eating at Black Meg 43 in Copperas Cove recently, the owner of Zip Air in Waco decided he wanted to do something to give back after meeting soldiers from Fort Hood.

So Mike Zipperlen got help from friends and family and headed back to the restaurant on Veterans Day where he handed out more than $300 in $5 bills.

Zipperlen gave the cash to any veteran, soldier, or military family member who walked in the door.

"These are guys that would go out and sacrifice their lives for us so why can't we buy a meal for them and they run into hard times having a brother-in-law in the military I get to see some of it," Zipperlen said.

When the owner of Black Meg 43 got wind of what was happening he matched the cash Zipperlen and his friends were handing out.

He even covered meals for veterans at three other Black Meg restaurant locations in Belton, Harker Heights, and Killeen.

Overall more than 300 veterans got a meal on the house Monday.

The manager of Black Meg 43 said the business was hoping to continue the tradition on Veterans Day next year.
