COPPERAS COVE (January 11, 2013)---Kathleen Ostendorf was free on bond Friday after she was arrested and charged with theft over $1,500 but under $20,000 after thousands of dollars was stolen from cash registers at the Copperas Cove Walmart store over a period of several months.

Copperas Cove police arrested her Wednesday at the store on East Highway 190.

She was ordered held in lieu of $8,000 bond.

The investigation that led to her arrest began Sunday after a loss prevention specialist at the store called police.

An arrest affidavit says Ostendorf admitted to taking as much as $5,000 from registers over the course of several months.

The affidavit says money was also added to a gift card without payment.

The loss prevention specialist provided police with a copy of a surveillance video that showed Ostendorf taking money from the register she operated, the affidavit said.

The affidavit said Ostendorf admitted in her sworn statement to police that she took between $4,500 and $5,000.

She said she needed the money to pay her bills and that her family had gone through a very hard time recently.
