TOPSEY (January 16, 2013)--A military radio tower in rural Coryell County near Topsey was toppled Wednesday morning by demolition experts from Fort Hood.

The Army built the 100-foot-tall tower back in the 1940s, but it has since become obsolete and the landowner had requested it be removed since it no longer was in use.

The tower was was off of Farm-to-Market 580 on the T.W. Whatley, Jr. estate and the estate administrator requested the removal.

Engineers from the 36th Engineer Brigade brought the tower down using about five pounds of explosives, and then went to work cutting up and disposing of the tower by recycling all materials through Fort Hood recycling facilities.

The project was coordinated with Coryell County Law Enforcement agencies and ONCOR Power Company.
