FORT HOOD (June 20, 2013)—Fort Hood Sgt. 1st Class. Nigel Dunn arrived back on post with 20 other military postal workers Thursday after a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan and promptly popped the question.

Dunn asked his girlfriend Ashlie Duenas to marry him.

She said, “Yes.”

"I got kind of nervous,” he said.

“I’m a shy kind of person but she deserves it. She’s been by my side for five years and it's about that time," Dunn said.

Dunn said the support from his girlfriend and their 4-year-old, Nigel Dunn, Jr., helped him stay strong while he was overseas.

Dunn kept the proposal a secret from most of the other soldiers in the unit.

Duenas said she wasn't expecting him to pop the question and was just happy to have him home and her family back together.

The couple lives in Killeen.

Duenas' family was with her Thursday after they flew in from Guam for the homecoming.
