FORT HOOD (June 20, 2013)--A battalion from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team is preparing for a summer deployment to Egypt in support of peacekeeping efforts in Sinai.
The 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division will deploy for nine months observing and reporting any violations of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
More than 400 soldiers will deploy and live in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula, near Sharm-el-Sheikh.
The soldiers will man the observation posts and checkpoints that separate the two countries.
They most recently spent six months training to accomplish the mission, and completed their rotation at the National Training Center in California.
They will serve as part of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) peacekeeping force, a result of the 1979 Camp David Peace Accords signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, Israeli President Menachem Begin and U.S. President Jimmy Carter.
The MFO is comprised of 13 nations.
