FORT HOOD (May 18, 2012)-A special ceremony on Monday will honor all Vietnam veterans, as III Corps and Fort Hood holds a "welcome home" celebration that they say many of the vets never received.
Veterans are still able to register, the Fort Hood website says.
Veterans participating in the parade will check-in beginning at 8 a.m. and assemble at 9 a.m.
At 10 a.m. they will parade onto Sadowski field in front of hundreds of supporters who appreciate their sacrifices of 50 years ago.
"This ceremony at the Great Place is about the Army embracing Vietnam veterans and caring for them because they never received the welcome home they deserved," III Corps and Fort Hood commanding general Lieutenant Gen. Don Campbell Jr. said.
After the event units are encouraged to host the veterans at open houses to show off their unit pride and exchange battle stories.
Also, a traveling Vietnam wall and static military vehicle displays will be available from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Memorial Park near the III Corps Headquarters.
The ceremony is being held in conjunction with Phantom Warrior Week, a week for all veterans to come together.
Tuesday, a 7 a.m. prayer breakfast and golf scramble will take place and on Wednesday, multiple sporting events will be going with the final goal being to earn the Commander's Cup.
Spectators are welcome and veterans are encouraged to cheer on their former units.
The "Pass in Review" will take place on Thursday on Sadowski Field prior to the presentation of the Commander's Cup.
Veterans wishing to participate in the events are asked to sign up online.
