HARKER HEIGHTS (March 7, 2013)--A Killeen resident and heart attack survivor is gearing up for the Bell County Heart Walk Saturday to spread awareness of heart disease and stroke.

Bess Robertson has lived in Killeen less than a month but is already sharing her story and getting active in the community by gearing up for the American Heart Association walk.

The annual Bell County Heart Walk Saturday is expected to draw dozens of heart attack survivors and their loved ones.

For Robertson, the event is special after she nearly died from a clot at the top of her heart while delivering newspapers in her hometown just over two years ago.

She says it all started after receiving rotator cuff surgery earlier in her life. She started eating more to keep up with her medication, slowly lending herself to bad habits.

She believes her choices in food contributed the most to the heart attack because she remained active and was a regular walker due to her newspaper delivery job.

At age 52, Robertson survived a massive heart attack, the same thing that killed her mother at age 62 and her grandmother at age 42.

Robertson is not only helping to raise money for research but will be cheering on others alongside her who came with the same mission.

The walk will be held on the Seton Medical Center campus at 9 a.m. with registration set for 8 a.m.

So far, the American Heart Association has earned $8,392 in donations from the Harker Heights event, according to the event’s website Thursday afternoon.

The money will be used for research to further prevent heart-related illnesses.

“It is a blessing. Things are so much better. I see a cardiologist, I’ve changed my eating habits, eaten more veggies and cut out extra salt and sugar from my diet,” Robertson said.
