HARKER HEIGHTS (January 18, 2013)--A new heart attack detection program at Seton Hospital will be available to all cardiovascular patients beginning Monday.

Not only will the hospital be able to provide EKGs (or electrocardiography) but the STEMI program will take it a step further to detect the severity of a heart attack.

Doctors hope the scan will allow them to provide treatment more quickly minimizing long-term damage to the heart muscle, especially in the event of a life-threatening STEMI.

According to the firstrespondersnetwork.com website, an ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a very serious type of heart attack during which one of the heart’s major arteries is blocked.

Doctors hope that with the new program, residents will not need to travel so far to get the diagnosis they need right then.
