HEWITT (December 6, 2012)--The Hewitt Police Department was given top honors by the National Association of Town Watches for National Night Out events planned for a city with a population of less than 15,000.
National Night Out took place in August and is intended to help connect police with the community and send a message to criminals that area crime will not be tolerated.
The police department took the top spot because of its community attendance, media coverage and releases, type of events held and community participation.
Hewitt was ranked 7th in the nation and 1st in Texas for its population size.
Citizens, law enforcement and officer Ann Thompson helped to make the event a success, Police Chief Jim Devlin said.
“We are proud to hold to these types of events and are humbled by the community support we receive,” Devlin said.
