HILLSBORO (September 3, 2014) Hillsboro’s 23rd annual Cotton Pickin’ Fair is set for Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 and will include a sanctioned barbecue cook-off in which chefs will compete for a total of $5,000 in prizes.
Visitors will be able to sample the barbecue this year for the first time.
"Since this competition will be one step along the national trek to the IBCA championships, we wanted to let our guests taste the fun," said Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Hidde.
"By purchasing tickets for our Taster's Choice Contest, fair-goers can sample delicious barbeque, and cast their vote to give contestants a “Taster’s Choice Award,” she said.
About 2,500 people are expected to attend the event in downtown Hillsboro.
The event begins on Sept. 26 with a street dance featuring the band Whiskey Hill.
On Sept. 27, the fair begins at 10 a.m.
"Every year, the streets of downtown are a festival filled with colorful booths manned by local restaurants offering local favorite flavors, and a variety of goods," Hidde said.
"You'll see everything from crafts to antiques, clothes to glass art and countless other one-of-a-kind trinkets from rural Central Texas."
The fair ends at sunset with the screening of family-friendly movie.
