TEMPLE (December 02, 2012)-One of the downsides of the holiday season is it can be a prime time for theft.
It's just one of the reasons why attendance has spiked in concealed handgun classes across Central Texas.
"Numbers in my class are better than they've ever been," CHL Instructor Johnny Price said.
"It's good for us, but unfortunately there are a lot of concerned citizens out there."
Price says he and other CHL Instructors he knows have had jam packed classes in the last month.
Many of Price's students say the outcome of the Presidential Election has been a popular reason why they've flocked to get their CHL.
But Price says many stress to him that they don't want to become victims of crime this holiday season.
"Violence is up, robberies are up, even muggings," Price said.
"Criminals just don't care. They don't care you want to get home to your wife and kids, they don't care about any of that. They're willing to beat you, knife you, or kill you just for something you have."
Price knows his students are looking for a way to protect themselves, but he wants to teach them more than that.
"We spend about 80% of our time trying to teach folks how not to have to use their gun," Price said.
"We try to stress different avenues a citizen can take. Using your gun should be your last resort."
It's a resort many in the class hope they won't have to take this Christmas.
