KILLEEN (October 1, 2013)--State and local investigations were underway Tuesday after a Killeen mother reported that a daycare worker slapped her 4-year-old daughter in the face.
Phyllis Brown of Killeen says her daughter, Ava Bradford, was slapped in the face Friday while at the Kinder Land Learning Academy daycare.
Brown said she noticed the girl was acting strangely after taking her home Friday.
"When I turned around she was almost in tears and she said, 'Mommy the teacher slapped me at school,’” Brown said.
Brown said she contacted the daycare immediately.
She said the daycare’s director asked her not to report the incident until after a meeting with the employee on Monday.
State law requires that daycare facilities report any abuse or neglect of a child within 48 hours.
Brown filed a complaint with Killeen police and also reported the incident to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
The daycare confirmed Tuesday that the employee was terminated, but declined to comment further on the incident.
The center said it is undergoing a management change and restructuring personnel.
Killeen police confirmed that the department’s Youth Services unit is investigating to determine whether charges are appropriate.
The state investigation could take as long as 45 days to complete.
The DFPS will determine whether minimum standards were violated and what the director of the daycare did to remedy the situation, spokeswoman Julie Moody said Tuesday.
"Currently child care licensing is investigating allegations regarding inappropriate discipline," she said.
