KILLEEN (May 23, 2014) The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery hosts a Memorial Day tribute Monday in Killeen.
The event, which is open to the public, is from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the cemetery off of State Highway 195 in Killeen.
Several area veterans organizations will participate and U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin, has been invited as well.
The Central Texas Fallen Heroes Foundation will dedicate a memorial stone honoring soldiers from Central Texas who have given their lives since 2003 in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
An additional black granite monument is dedicated each Memorial Day at the cemetery.
On one side of each seven-foot stone, the names of the soldiers who died during that year are listed and the photos of the fallen have been photo-etched on the reverse side.
“We invite the public to attend this memorial tribute to our fallen heroes,” said Bill McLemore, Deputy Commissioner for the Texas Veterans Land Board, which oversees the Texas State Veterans Cemeteries.
“It’s the least we can do for those who gave of themselves to preserve the freedoms we enjoy.
