KILLEEN (January 29, 2013)--The Texas Historical Commission’s State Board of Review has approved Killeen for the National Register of Historic Places.
Specifically, 4th Street to 8th Street and Avenue B to Avenue D was nominated based on its mid-century buildings and historical significance as a military town.
The listing promotes tourism and enables the city to receive federal tax credits for rehabilitation of historic buildings.
Downtown revitalization efforts are ongoing including adopting a Historic Preservation Ordinance, completing the 2008 Historic Resources Survey, designating a historic overlay district and developing a four-part video series about the city’s history.
