KILLEEN (June 28, 2012)--Midnite, a horse with a prosthetic leg, will give hope to campers with special needs on Thursday.

The campers are part of the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital's Summer Camp which will be held at the Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children on FM 2484, which gives children with special needs a chance to celebrate the health-giving benefits of nature.

The special horse was rescued by Ranch Hand Rescue whose CEO, Bob Williams, will be the featured guest speaker for the evening and will share his story about why he started the sanctuary and rescue.

Williams says Midnite came to the rescue organization from the North Texas Humane Society after being seized from a family for abuse and neglect.

He was found without his back left hoof so it remains unknown if it was a congenital condition or the result of poor care.

The horse was unable to walk, run or lie down to rest because of the agony he faced trying to stand up again.

His muscles began wasting away from lack of use and he had no balance, Williams said.

"In March of 2011, Midnite stunned everyone at his final fitting for a specially-designed prosthetic leg… he took off in a full gallop around his barnyard buddies and now makes all kinds of special appearances giving hope to people," Williams said.

Ranch officials say Midnite's appearances have recently been limited by a lack of funds.

"Midnite is in need of a special trailer that is air-conditioned, with a ramp and room to lie down," a member of the organization said.

A Facebook page and blog will be launched in a couple of weeks in hopes of getting corporate sponsors and individuals to help fund Midnite's trips to children's and veterans hospitals.

Midnite has been featured on numerous TV programs including Good Morning America, FOX News, Entertainment Tonight, Time Magazine for Kids and on the Discovery Channel and the BBC, Williams said, and Animal Planet is expected to air a story on "The Horse of Hope" in the fall.
