LAMPASAS (September 18, 2012)--Bids are currently being accepted for the construction of a new fire station to be located at 1107 E. Fourth Street.

Bids will be looked at next Wednesday and a contractor could be selected and approved within the following couple of weeks.

The new facility will mean an end to leaking ceilings, foundation problems, bat infestation and limited space.

The fire station is estimated to cost between $1.2 and $1.4 million and will be shared by the city and county.

Because the city and county hope to share in the use of the new facility, the city has asked the county if it would relieve the city of some of the financial burden.

According to a 40-year agreement made earlier this year, county commissioners would pay $400,000 toward the construction costs and some of the possible future repairs to the building.

Roughly $460,000 of the county's money was left over from tax notes and a county bond issued to build annexes in downtown Lampasas, County Auditor Jack Clark said earlier this year.

In January, the city had a $750,000 construction budget.

County officials said the agreement gives the county access to the city-owned station and the county would get a pro-rated share of the building if it sells.

The proposed two-story fire station would have at least twice as many bays, allowing two trucks to share one bay.

Other additions will include an administration office, separate sleeping areas for men and women, a kitchen, a laundry room, and a workout area.

Sewer and water line installation is already being completed on the property.

The fire station is expected to be completed sometime next year.
