LAMPASAS (April 26, 2013)--Funeral services for a soldier with Lampasas ties who was struck by a log-hauling truck were scheduled for Friday.

Fort Wainwright Spc. Zachary Lane New, 21, of Jarrell, who was struck January 29 by a log-hauling truck near Salcha, Alaska, died of his injuries almost three months after the accident.

Alaska State Troopers said the truck driver was hauling a trailer full of logs on the Richardson Highway in icy conditions when the truck struck an Army Humvee that was turning into a parking lot to the Midway Lodge.

According to troopers, the truck went into the parking lot and struck New as he got out of a parked Humvee.

Troopers say the truck then struck two parked Stryker armored vehicles.

Officials said Tuesday that New died Monday at a rehabilitation center at a San Antonio veterans hospital.

New was a graduate of Lampasas High School.

Funeral services were scheduled for 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Lampasas.

Burial will be held at 2 p.m. with full military honors at Killeen’s Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
