MCLENNAN COUNTY (April 17, 2013)—Waco-based Department of Public Safety Trooper Thomas Ladd was honored Wednesday for saving the life of a seriously injured highway worker after a crash on Interstate 35 that left another worker dead.
Ladd was given a Life Saving Award for his quick action after arriving at the scene of the accident on Oct. 25, 2012 in a construction zone on Interstate 35 north of Waco where a highway worker whose foot was severed ended up trapped beneath a vehicle.
Ladd helped free the worker and then fashioned a makeshift tourniquet to stop the bleeding, saving the man’s life, the DPS said.
The injured worker, whose name wasn’t released, was flown to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, in Waco, and then later flown to Scott & White Hospital, in Temple.
The second worker, Josh McGowan, 42, of Dallas, died in the early morning accident when he was run over by a construction truck that was struck from the rear by a southbound 18-wheeler.
McGowan worked for Brooklyn Sweeper, a highway construction clean-up company based in Dallas.
Two other workers and the driver of the construction truck were also injured and were taken by ambulance to Hillcrest.
