McLennan County: Jury Duty Scam Reported

MCLENNAN COUNTY (February 14, 2014) Someone is calling McLennan County residents and telling them that arrest warrants will be issued for failure to report for jury duty unless they send money, authorities said Friday.

The caller has mainly targeted elderly residents, Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Cawthon said Friday.

A warrant could be issued for a resident who receives a jury summons and fails to report, McLennan County District Clerk Karen Matkin said in a press release.

But, she said, “No one from the sheriff’s office would collect any money or even arrest you for failing to appear for jury duty unless you appeared in front of a judge first.”

Residents who receive such calls should contact the District Clerk’s Office at (254) 757-5054, she said.
